MTP Joint Fusion

An MTP (Metatarsophalangeal) Joint Fusion is a surgical procedure used to stabilise and permanently join the joint of the big toe due to the pain associated with advanced arthritis. It is performed to reduce pain, correct deformity, and improve alignment and function of the forefoot during walking and daily activities. In addition to wearing your boot for the next 4 weeks, we also require you to begin rehabilitation. Rehabilitation will promote a fast recovery, prevent deficits in walking and strength, and decrease stiffness during the early post operative phase. Please see the key exercises we need you to perform below. Refer to the handout for specific repetitions and sets per day.
