Ankle Fusion

An Ankle Fusion is a surgical procedure used to reduce the pain from ankle arthritis by joining the tibia and talus together (fusing the joint). It is performed to eliminate painful joint movement, improve stability, and allow a more controlled and functional gait. To allow appropriate healing, you will be non-weight-bearing for six weeks in a moonboot and on crutches/knee scooter. Post-operatively, you will be placed into a moonboot until your nurse clinic review. Despite being non weight-bearing and no longer being able to move your ankle, it is super important you begin rehabilitation. Rehabilitation will promote a fast recovery, prevent deficits in walking and strength, and decrease associated joint stiffness during the early post operative phase. Please see the key exercises we need you to perform below. Refer to the handout for specific repetitions and sets per day.
