MTP Cheilectomy

A 1st MTP joint cheilectomy is a procedure used to treat pain and stiffness in the big toe joint, often caused by early arthritis (sometimes called “hallux rigidus”). A small incision is made over the top of the big toe joint so the surgeon can clearly see the area. The main goal is to remove the extra bone (“bone spurs”) that have formed around the joint. These spurs can block movement and cause pain, especially when bending the toe upwards. The excess bone is removed and the joint surfaces smoothed, which helps restore movement and reduce discomfort. Once the joint can move more freely, the incision is closed with stitches and the foot is bandaged.
