STJ Fusion

A Subtalar Joint (STJ) Fusion is a procedure used to stabilise and reduce pain associated with advanced arthritis within the subtalar joint of the hindfoot. It involves permanently joining/fusing the talus and calcaneus joint surfaces to improve alignment, provide stability, and support more efficient and comfortable walking. To allow appropriate healing, you will be non-weight-bearing for six weeks in a moonboot and on crutches/knee scooter. Post-operatively, you will be placed into a moonboot until your nurse clinic review but asked to commence early rehabilitation. In addition to wearing your boot for the next 3 weeks, we also require you to begin rehabilitation. Rehabilitation will promote a fast recovery, prevent deficits in walking and strength, and decrease stiffness during the early post operative phase. Please see the key exercises we need you to perform below. Refer to the handout for specific repetitions and sets per day.
